Perth Gate Installation

A fence does its job until someone needs to get through it. That is where the gate matters, and it is where a surprising number of installations fall short. A gate that drags on the ground because the opening was not measured properly. A driveway gate that sags within six months because the posts were undersized for the span. A pool gate with a latch that does not self-lock reliably. These are problems we fix regularly on gates installed by other fencing contractors, and they are entirely avoidable.

At Fosters Fencing, Tim Utting and David Fallows have been fabricating and installing Perth gates since 2011, with 35 years of combined fencing experience between them. We work closely with each customer to match the gate to the fence, the property, and the specific purpose, whether that is driveway access, pedestrian entry, pool compliance, or enhanced security. Every gate we build is fabricated to the exact opening width, hung on hardware rated for the weight, and fitted with latches and locks suited to how the gate will actually be used.

We supply and install across the Perth metropolitan area and do not use subcontractors. The person who measures your opening is the same person who oversees the fabrication and installation. Get in touch for a free quote.

    Types Of Gates We Install

Gate requirements vary depending on the opening, the fence type, the material, and what the gate needs to do. Here is a breakdown of what we build and install.

    Colorbond Gates

Colorbond gates are the most common type we install because they integrate seamlessly with colorbond fencing, matching in colour, profile, and height. Single gates work well up to about 2 metres wide. Double gates for driveway or vehicle access can be fabricated up to approximately 3.6 metres before the span and weight begin to affect smooth operation. We fit every colorbond gate with your choice of latches and locks, from thumb latches on side access gates to keyed deadbolts for front entries.

Paris Champion, one of our clients, described Tim as “an excellent communicator” who coordinated the entire fence and gate installation, including bordering neighbours, and made the whole process seamless. That kind of coordination matters when a new gate needs to work with an existing fence line or sit between two properties with different ground levels.

    Pool Compliant Gates

Pool fencing regulations in Western Australia under AS 1926.1 are specific, and the gate is where most compliance failures occur. All pool gates must open outwards, with a minimum gate height of 1.2 metres. The latch must be elevated to 1.5 metres and be self-locking, and the hinges must be self-closing. The outward-opening requirement exists to prevent children from using chairs or objects on the inside to push the gate open and walk straight through.

We install pool compliant gates in aluminium, tubular fencing profiles, and glass, using self-closing hinges and elevated latches from D and D Technologies, an Australian manufacturer whose hardware is purpose-built for pool gate applications. Every pool gate we install is checked against the current standard before we leave the site, because a gate that does not latch properly is not just a failed installation. It is a safety risk.

    Steel And Security Gates

For properties where security is the primary concern, we fabricate steel gates in tubular and flat-bar profiles that provide a physical barrier against unauthorised access. These are common on commercial properties, sheds, side access points, and properties backing onto laneways. Steel gates can be powder-coated in a range of colours to suit the property, and we reinforce the post and hinge side to handle the additional weight that comes with heavier-gauge steel construction.

    Sliding Gates

Where the driveway width or site layout makes a swinging gate impractical, a sliding gate is the solution. We build sliding gates in colorbond, aluminium, and steel, with tracks engineered for the gate weight and opening width. Sliding gates are particularly common on commercial properties and homes with short driveways where a swinging gate would block the footpath or encroach on the street.

    Automatic Gates And Gate Automation

We supply and install gate automation systems for both swing and sliding gates. Automation adds convenience for everyday use and enhanced security for properties where controlling access is a priority. We use automation systems from established manufacturers and size the motor to the gate weight and frequency of use, because an undersized motor on a heavy driveway gate is one of the most common reasons automated gates fail prematurely.

If you already have a manual gate and want to add automation, we can retrofit a motor system to most existing gate setups without replacing the gate itself, provided the gate is structurally sound and properly hung. We assess the gate condition and advise whether automation is feasible or whether a new gate is the better path.

Perth Gates Built For Local Conditions

Perth’s conditions put specific demands on gate hardware and materials that get overlooked when the installer does not know the area. Along the coast from Fremantle through to Joondalup, salt spray carried by the Fremantle Doctor corrodes unprotected steel hinges and latches within a couple of years. In suburbs with sandy Bassendean soils, gate posts need deeper concrete footings to prevent the lean that develops when sandy ground shifts under lateral load. On properties with limestone sitting close to the surface, core drilling for gate posts requires different equipment and technique compared to standard sandy or clay ground.

We have installed gates across the Perth metro area for over a decade, and we know where these issues show up. Grrayt, one of our Google reviewers, said he “expressed my wants and concerns with Tim and nothing was too much for them to achieve” and called it a “top quality job.” Tom Lowndes described the finished result as “great communication and work” with the team leaving “the site clean.” That consistency across different suburbs and different job types is what 35 years of combined experience produces.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Standard single driveway gates are typically around 3 metres wide, while double gates can span up to approximately 3.6 metres. The right size depends on your driveway width, the turning angle from the street, and whether you need clearance for larger vehicles like trailers or boats. We measure the opening on site and recommend the configuration that gives you practical access without compromising the gate’s structural integrity.

Yes. We fabricate gates in the full BlueScope colorbond colour range, standard aluminium colours, and woodgrain finishes, so matching to an existing fence line is straightforward. If the existing fence is an older colorbond colour that has been discontinued, we source the closest available match and discuss it with you before fabrication.

All pool gates in Western Australia must comply with AS 1926.1. The gate must open outwards, have self-closing hinges, a self-locking latch elevated to 1.5 metres, and a minimum height of 1.2 metres. We install to these specifications and verify compliance on every job. If your existing pool gate is not compliant, we can replace or modify it.

Most single gate installations are completed within a few hours as part of a broader fencing job. Standalone gate installations, including post setting and concrete curing, typically take one to two days depending on the gate type and whether automation is included. We provide a clear timeline during the quoting stage.

In most cases, yes. We assess the condition, weight, and hanging of the existing gate to determine whether it can support a motor system. If the gate and posts are structurally sound, we can retrofit automation without a full replacement. If the gate has structural issues, we will let you know and quote for a new automated gate instead.
